A spa pool sounds like a delivery problem until you try to move one. They're heavy - typically 500 to 900 kilograms empty - and they're almost always going somewhere awkward. Wellington's terrain amplifies the challenge: the backyard that seemed like a great spot for a spa is often accessible only through a gate that the spa won't fit through, down a bank that a delivery truck can't navigate, or over a fence line that no amount of willing helpers can manage.

Every spa pool move starts with understanding the access challenge at both the pickup point and the final destination. When you call CDT, Alan will ask about the delivery location in detail - the driveway, the garden layout, any fence heights, overhanging trees or power lines, and ground conditions. From that conversation, he can usually give you a clear picture of how the lift will work and what it will cost.
On the day, Alan positions the truck at the best available point for the crane reach needed. Proper lifting straps are placed around the spa (Alan will advise on rigging points - most modern spa shells have designated lift points). The crane lifts the pool, swings it over whatever obstacle exists, and lowers it into position. For tricky positions - narrow placement between two fences, or onto a deck - the process requires precision and patience. CDT has both.
CDT also works with spa pool retailers and suppliers to handle delivery jobs that their standard delivery team can't complete. Absolutely not. The water alone adds between 1,500 and 2,000 kg for most standard spas - far too heavy for safe HIAB lifting and more than enough to crack the shell under strain. Always drain your spa thoroughly before any move to protect the equipment, your property, and your investment.
A minimum of 2.5 metres is required for the truck to manoeuvre into position. The HIAB boom can extend over obstacles provided there's at least 4 metres of vertical clearance overhead, which allows CDT to work effectively around even the most constrained residential properties.
Not if you're simply repositioning it within your existing section. However, placing it in a new location could trigger Building Act requirements - particularly if the spa ends up closer to a boundary or if the electrical supply route needs altering. It's always worth checking with your local council before committing to a new spot.
For a straightforward move under 20 metres with unobstructed access, expect roughly 1–2 hours. More intricate lifts - clearing buildings, threading around tight corners, navigating multi-level sections - can stretch to 3 hours or beyond, depending entirely on site conditions.
They certainly can. Swim spas weighing up to 2,500 kg when empty fall well within HIAB capacity. Their elongated shells do demand careful balancing and occasionally supplementary rigging gear to ensure stable, safe transportation throughout the move.
Drain your spa completely, isolate the power at the mains, remove the spa cover and steps, and clear a generous 3-metre space around both the spa and its intended new home. Taking care of these steps beforehand means Alan can crack on efficiently the moment he arrives.
